Students: Why Own A Computer
In This Section
Owning a computer creates opportunities for you to perform at your peak. It also helps instructors assist you academically while streamlining their administrative tasks. By using technology to enhance the brick and mortar walls of the classrooms, you will also be able to broaden your peer-based learning and teamwork skills. Additionally, preparing yourself now with basic computer experience will be invaluable for your career.
With your computer, you can also access a variety of UC Davis Web-based resources to help you complete your assignments and reach your academic goals:
- Libraries: library catalog, electronic resources like databases, and online publications.
- MyUCDavis: customizable and personalized Web portal with links to many frequently used UC Davis online resources.
- Employment Opportunities: the UC Davis Internship and Career Center Web site, the UC Davis Student Employment Web site, and the AggieTraks on campus recruiting system.
- UC Davis Home Page: class and major information, various campus resources, and much more.
Instructors on campus have also been using technology increasingly. Course Web pages are the most common method of integrating technology and teaching. Instructors on campus also make use of technology in their teaching. Many create Web pages for their courses. During the Spring 2005 quarter, there were almost 1,500 course Web sites, and 45-50% of all enrolled students on campus used these Web sites to access one of more of the following:
- Course syllabi and professor contact information
- Course assignments, paper topics, problem sets, and homework solutions
- Class lecture notes, slides, overheads, and handouts
- Practice or past exams
- Art or music samples
- Interactive downloadable programs
- Relevant Internet links
